HOW THE WEIGHT GOES AWAY

After undergoing bariatric surgery to embark on a new life, you must have realistic expectations and understand the mechanisms of weight loss so as to help your organism lose weight. Desirable results will follow, but remember that the operation is a means and not an end in itself.

Life after surgery can be divided into two periods, that of weight loss and that of stabilization. Weight decreases with varying levels of intensity for 12-18 months. The time is necessary to the gradual transformation of your metabolism. It is believed that the optimal rate of weight loss is 1 kg a week. Moreover, slow reduction of weight allows your skin to regain its elasticity and to shrink at least partially (unfortunately, after a massive weight loss the skin almost never recovers completely, thus necessitating plastic surgery in the future).

After gastric bypass:

The first three months are a real honeymoon as the weight falls away. You will feel the first changes after discharge from hospital, then notice a miracle change in your metabolism as it begins to utilize your fat deposits. The first 15-20 or even 30 kilograms disappear, for during this period your organism is not adapted to metabolic deficiency and easily gives up the fat. Later, in a few months, the speed of weight loss decreases. This is normal: the less the excess weight, the more difficult the weight loss. Do not be discouraged, for the battle is half won.

To facilitate ongoing weight loss, exercise moderation with such high energy food as sugar, chocolate, butter. Eat plenty of protein (meat, fish, poultry) as this is necessary to rebuild your tissues.

Add some moderate physical activity to your schedule. If you can not visit a fitness center or a swimming pool, bear in mind that every little helps: take the stairs instead of the elevator, or try to run in the park. Be active. Adequate physical activity is the best natural regulator of metabolism.

By thus forcing your body to expend its strategic fat deposits, you can stabilize your weight at a desirable level in less than two years.

After adjustable gastric banding:

During the first 2 months after the operation your bandage stays empty: this period is necessary for the stabilization of the device in the tissues around the stomach, as scar tissue is given time to fix the bandage in place and prevent further dislocation. Theoretically, weight loss is not desired at this time, though in some cases it occurs.

After the first adjustment the bandage is narrowed and starts squeezing the stomach behind it. The patient gains the feeling of early satiety in a few days.

But this pressure results in a gradual dissipation of the fat deposit between the cuff and the stomach, producing a dilatation of the gastric lumen. This means that a week or two after the first adjustment it is necessary to perform the second one. It is generally after this that intensive weight loss begins. This period usually lasts for six months, during which the patient loses 30-40% of excess weight. Then the stabilization begins and the weight loss stops. To resume weight loss it may be necessary to make a few more adjustments, after which the final weight loss can be achieved in a year. This final level of weight loss is determined by the patient.

Technically it is possible to achieve an ideal weight, but usually at the cost of some discomfort. If a patient does not want this, he/she can stop on a level a little above the ideal.

After other restrictive operations:

After other restrictive operations, such as sleeve gastrectomy of ASG, the decrease of weight goes by the pattern typical of gastric bypass. The specific feature of these operations is a marked difficulty in food passage through the stomach for the first few weeks after the operation. Frequently these patients have to stick to liquid or semi-liquid food for the first 3-4 weeks, and so the greatest weight loss takes place during the first 2-3 months after the operation.
